I'm getting seriously worried about this place...it's very alarming to see so few insects now...we couldn't walk up the garden two or three years back in the morning without seeing spider's webs spun across the paths with dew on them...now we might see one maybe...there were no lovely irridescent green beetles this year, there aren't even any weevils! And the waterworks midges were tiny in number this year too...I find it rather scary...something is very wrong here...GBHs...XXX

I blame all the insecticide and GM modified crops. It's all very well getting better crops that haven't been attacked by insects, but that means the insects can't find suitable food, and a decline in insect population means a decline in fruit that need pollinating and a decline in birds that rely on them as food. They used to crop-spray round here quite a lot, you could tell when they'd been spraying by the milky deposit on cars and windows, but these last few years they don't seem to have been doing it as much, and the fields nearest us are used for sheep and horses, so they don't get sprayed at all. Hopefully some of the insects from these parts will find their way back to areas like yours when conditions are favourable.

Well, it was difficult, as I had to get very close to them, and they kept flying away just as I got them in focus, but I did my best

Colour galore for sure.

- 2009-07-19 @ 21:42:19
Surprisingly difficult to get them in focus - they don't sit still for long if you approach them, and I haven't got one of those telephoto lenses, just my little digital camera.

'...........they don't sit still for long'
Maybe camera shy - they need training - lol-
- 2009-07-31 @ 21:16:16
I don't think anyone's ever managed to train a butterfly, but you're welcome to try.......let me know how you get on
