I've been trying to read your latest posts, but computer has been saying "NO" Don't know what the problem is yet, but if you don't hear from me that's the reason why. I can still write stuff on my own blog, but I can only get through to just a couple of you to read and comment on your blogs. Hopefully the problem will be sorted before too long (I've emailed my service provider as I think it might be something to do with them, as I can't even access things like the BBC homepage, or Google though I can get some other sites!

 Comments

I give up! - I've finally been defeated!

I've tried and tried to catch up on all your blogs, by reading the oldest first and trying to not miss any out. I was hoping to gradually make headway, but I'm fighting a losing battle

You all blog too much! I don't stand a cat in hell's chance of ever getting up to date that way! In fact, I've got so far behind that some of the posts I haven't seen have disappeared off the end of page 10 of my friends posts

So.......I Have Decided..........

I'm giving up catching up, and I'm just going to read and comment on your latest posts from now on, and hope you'll let me know if I miss anything important, then, if I've any time left over, I'll have a flick through your blogs and read as many of your older posts as I have time for, but will probably only comment on a few of those, as there won't usually be much point on commenting on events long since happened.

I love you all, and I'm really sorry to have to miss some of your posts. I did try to keep up, really I did, but there just didn't seem to be enough hours in the day to fit everything in

Tuesday.... went to Ipswich to the Regent Theatre to see Beverly Knight. Left home in the afternoon, and had a nice Indian meal in a restaurant before the show. Beverly was in fine form, and we thoroughly enjoyed the performance - except that when everyone stood up and started wriggling around I had a hard time seeing her. I could see fine when we were sitting, but the chap in front of me must have had very long legs, so I ended up peering between his and his partners shoulders in order to be able to see. Took quite a few photos, but I can't zoom in very far with my little camera, so they're not very good - but here's the best one just in case you're interested
(Click on photo to see larger image)

Wednesday....Spent the morning catching up on the chores then went to the doctors in the afternoon for my regular 6 monthly check up. I have to have them because I'm on Statins to help keep my cholesterol down, and Clopidogrel which inhibits blood clotting. All was hunky dory

Thursday....Got a phone call from the dentist, to say that my regular dentist was off sick, so the needed to re-arrange my appointment that had been scheduled for that morning. I wasn't at all happy about that, as I'd had a toothache since Friday 23rd October! Already told you all about that HERE I absolutely refused to change my appointment time, and eventually they said that if I came along to the surgery and waited then someone would see me, but they had no idea how long I would have to wait. I went, and I waited, and waited, and read every magazine in the waiting room from cover to cover, and waited....and eventually my name was called. The dentist (a rather dishy young man as it happened) Xrayed my jaw, and identified an infection in the root. He had to drill right through one of the crowns of my bridge to access it (and managed to hit the nerve, which reduced me to a trembling lump of jelly, so he gave me a second injection before proceeding), and finally drilled down to the infection, and then inserted a temporary filling. I have to go back for some more work. and a permanent filling on 27th Nov

Friday.... Spent most of the day baking (bread and egg-free cake amongst other things) and catching up on housework. I usually have my baking day on Thursday, but I really couldn't be asked to start once I got back from the dentist - my tooth was aching even worse from all the prodding about once my mouth had unfrozen! It had eased up a lot by Friday morning though, and by the evening it was fine so long as I didn't eat on that side.

Saturday.... Spent the day travelling to and from Mum-in-law's with hubby, and had a pleasant few hours there cleaning all the tiles in her kitchen, and conversing about the pro's and con's of various types of incontinence pads Took her the egg-free cake I made (She's allergic to eggs, but she does love her bit of cake) Did get to see one of my nephews though, as he dropped in while we were there, and also my brother-in law and sister-in law who arrived with one of my little great-nieces in tow as they were babysitting her. Had a nice chat with them all Got a KFC bargain bucket on the way home and pigged out on that while watching X Factor on the telly.

Today.... Recuperating!! (and thought it was about time I updated my blog!)

That's it folks - hope all's well with all of you, and I will now do my best (after I've cooked dinner) to catch up on some of your blogs.

Started up on Saturday evening, just as I was enjoying a pizza. An excruciating shock as I bit down actually made me yell out loud with pain - and I'm no wimp where pain's concerned.

Well, I managed to finish my pizza.....slowly......chewing on the other side of my mouth, you'll be glad to know There's not a lot can put me off my food!

Anyway, it being the weekend, I've had to soldier on through it with the aid of pain-killers, and phoned up the Dentist first thing this morning. The earliest appointment they could offer me was 5th November, but they've promised to contact me straight away if they have any cancellations for an earlier date.

I guess I'll just have to keep popping the pills then.

I wanted to open a new container of dishwasher powder. It's one of those plastic ones with an "easy pour" spout. There's two little arrows, one on each side of the spout, and you have to squeeze the spout by the arrows and then pull it up. Well I tried and I tried, but it was too tough for me! I just couldn't squeeze it hard enough......so I gave up and called in the troops (aka hubby) to open it for me.

He failed too, and he's pretty strong and fit!! So... he examined the lid and decided it might be easier to just undo the whole top. (I hadn't thought of that) A little flick of the wrist, and the top unscrewed - DEAD EASY! He reckoned a three year old could have done it.
I used to make out a shopping list, just before going to the shops, by looking in the kitchen cupboards, fridge and freezer, and writing down everything we seemed to be short of. That never seemed to work very well, because inevitably there were things I didn't spot - because I'd used up every last little bit, so there was no half empty packet to remind me that I needed to buy some more.

So I decided some time ago to do the following:-

I keep a shopping list on the fridge door, held in place by magnets, and I keep a pencil handy in the recess of the fridge door handle.

As soon as I notice that supplies of something is getting a bit low I write it on the list, and hubby does the same. Then, when we go shopping we stick to the list, and cross things off as we buy them, so we don't miss anything.

Theoretically this method should work like clockwork

However............

In practice........

1 We often forget to put something vital on the list because we weren't in the kitchen when we realised we needed more. (We keep the loo rolls upstairs, near the loo, for instance)

2 We often put something down that we already have a spare of (didn't notice it at the back of the cupboard/bottom of the freezer)

3 We often buy things not on the list because one of us suddenly says "I think we're running low on ketchup, but I forgot to write it down", so we buy one "just in case". Inevitably when we get home we find there's a stockpile of them in the cupboard from previous similar "just in case's". I've currently got enough packets of rice to plant my own paddy field!

4 The list doesn't account for all those "two for the price of one" or "buy two, second one half price" offers....we don't want two, we don't need two, but we'd be daft to buy just one at full price, or to not buy something at a reduced price this week just because it's not on the list, and then pay full price for it next week!

5 We often forget to take the list with us, so we have to shop by guesswork anyway!

Has anyone got any bright ideas for a better method

The 'pods'?? look as though they are flower buds, but I know they're not because it produced one last year. I was really excited, waiting for it to open out into what I thought would be some giant exotic flower, but all it did was drop the pale outside sheath, to show a green centre that looked like a cross between a corn cob and a fir cone. Eventually that one dropped off. This year it has three, all growing in a bunch. Just thought you might find it interesting! Has anyone else ever had that happen?

This lovely poem by Blckbird reminded me of that today, and also brought to mind this beautiful song.

The Streets Of London

1. Have you seen the old man in the closed down market
Kicking up the paper with his worn out shoes
In his eyes you see no pride and held loosely by his side
Yesterdays papers telling yesterdays news.

Chorus:
So how can you tell me you’re lonely?
And say for you that the sun don’t shine.
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
Show you something to make you change your mind.

2. Have you seen the old girl who walks the streets of London?
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags
She’s no time for talking, she just keeps on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

Chorus:

3. In the all night cafe at a quarter past eleven
Same old man sitting there on his own
Looking at the world over the rim of his teacup
Each tea lasts an hour and he wanders home alone.

Chorus:

4. Have you seen the old man outside the seaman’s mission?
Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears
In our winter city the rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero and a world that doesn’t care.

Chorus:
So how can you tell me you’re lonely?
And say for you that the sun don’t shine
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London.
Show you something to make you change your mind.

I'm just soooo behind on reading everyones blogs, cos as soon as I catch up on them something else comes up, and then I have to catch up on everything all over again. So I'm really sorry lads and lassies if I haven't been visiting your blogs much of late, but Hey Ho there's no rest for the wicked.....
and I'm just SUCH a BAD BAD girl

I think I lost a day somewhere because I did an extra stint at my voluntary job the day before (to cover for someone's holiday leave) and that wasn't the day I usually go in, so I got all mixed up somehow, and so did Hubby! We'd decided the day before that we'd go out for the day, while the weather was still reasonable, and we'd decided to go to Longleat Safari Park. Hubby even said it could be a "pre-birthday treat" I did notice in the morning that there seemed to be a fair bit of mail, and that several of the envelopes looked like they might be Birthday cards, but I just thought people had posted them off early to make sure they got to me in time! So, I left them unopened, and we set off for Longleat.

Took loads of photos, but a lot of them weren't much cop, because the animals were too far away, and of course while we were in with the lions and tigers etc we couldn't open the car windows, so a lot of them were blurred by glass and reflections. Still, I managed to get a fair selection, and here they are.

If you hover over any picture you will get a description, and you can click on any of them for a bigger picture

Sorry about the quality of the last two, but it was the best I could do in the circs.

When we'd finished driving round the safari park, we went in the butterfly house, and they were HUGE! This one's wingspan would have covered my hand from fingertip to wrist.

We also found these little chaps in the butterfly house - I found them fascinating!

On the way home we stopped off at a pub for something to eat - They had a special price on some of the meals, and you could have any two of the specials for £4 each. Hubby had fish and chips with peas and a glass of beer, and I had steak and kidney pudding with mashed potatoes carrots and peas, and a half of cider. It may not have been cordon bleu cooking, but it was very palatable plain fare, and at those prices really excellent value!

When we got back I made a cup of tea for myself, and a coffee for hubby, and logged on. OMG!! There were so many emails and PM's, and I noticed the date on them, and said to hubby "What's the date today?", and he said "The 19th" so I checked my computer clock........and the penny dropped Hubby was watching as I did it, and he said "Oh my god!" and rushed out of the room and came back with my pressie, and the stack of cards, and a bottle of port and two glasses, and we had a jolly good laugh about it

I opened all my cards and pressies, and then spent the rest of the evening eating birthday choccies and getting pleasantly squiffy on port while catching up on the numerous birthday greetings from all you lovely people. So thank you one and all for your super blog cards and birthday greeting pm's, and I hope you enjoyed hearing about my super (nearly forgotten) birthday.

(Click on any pic for bigger image)

and there's lots of flowers still, so there'll be even more.

Hubby picked these this morning. We've had this many every day for quite a while now.

We can't eat them all straight away, so I freeze the surplus. These are some I've just cut into inch long pieces.

The bowl was full by the time I'd finished

Then hubby bagged them up for me and popped them in the freezer.

There's several bags this size in the freezer already. By the time they're finished cropping there will be enough to last us right through till next season, and all for the price of a packet of seeds!

We've already got lots of home-grown asparagus, raspberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries and rhubarb in the freezer
and there's a nice crop of leeks coming along too.

Hover over them with your cursor for a brief description.

Click on any image for a full screen view

It was lunchtime when we first arrived, so we started off by having some lunch in the restaurant in the old stable block.

Then we headed for the house itself....

We had a wander round inside, but weren't allowed to take any photos, so here's some links I found for you that shows Benjamin Disraeli's study, and a detail of his robe that he wore when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Then we wandered round a bit more outside.

All in all it was a very nice day out!

Haven't seen it around for yonks, but then again it's not the sort of thing you think of adding to the shopping list is it?......Especially if you can't remember what it's called!

Ingredients

675g (11/2lbs) carrots (peeled and chopped into chunks)
3 Tbs vegetable oil
1 large onion (sliced)
2 medium potatoes (peeled & chopped)
2 tsp ground coriander
6 cups (3pts) vegetable stock
1 cup (1/2pt) fresh coriander leaves
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Crème fraîche for garnish.

Method

Heat the oil in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, and cook the onion over a low heat until soft.
Add the chopped potatoes to the pan, cook for a few minutes, and then add the carrots and ground coriander, and cook over a low heat for 3-4 minutes stirring frequently.
Cover the pan and sauté for 8-10 mins, stirring now and then to prevent sticking.
Add the stock, bring to the boil and simmer for another 10 mins, until the vegs are tender.
Finely chop the coriander leaves, set aside about 1Tbs for garnish, add the rest to the pan, stir, and remove pan from the heat.
Liquidise the soup in a food processor, or whizz with a blender. (If soup is too thick add a little water until you have the desired consistency.
Return the soup to the pan, season to taste with the salt and pepper, and reheat over a low heat.

Serve with a swirl of Crème fraîche, and a sprinkle of chopped coriander.

(serves 2-3)
2 large potatoes,(washed and sliced unpeeled)
2 carrots (peeled and sliced)
1/2 medium sized swede (peeled and diced)
2 leeks (sliced)
125 ml (1/4 pint) stock (use a vegetable stock cube, or a little vegemite dissolved in hot water)
Salt and pepper to taste
50g (2oz) breadcrumbs
50-75g (2-3oz) grated cheese

Method

Grease a 1.5 litre (23/4 pint) casserole dish
Arrange vegetables in layers in casserole, beginning and ending with a layer of potatoes.
Pour stock over vegs.
Cover with tight fitting lid or kitchen foil.
Cook at 180C conventional oven (fan oven 155c) Gas Mark 3, for 1-11/2 hours.
Uncover, mix breadcrumbs and cheese together and sprinkle on top of casserole.
Return to oven (uncovered) and cook for a further 10-15 minutes until topping is crisp and starting to brown.

(Milly - if you don't fancy the cheesy topping, try mixing the breadcrumbs with some fried onion and herbs, and just enough water to bind it - or use some stuffing mix - and spread that on top instead, brush with a little oil and brown off as above)
